The European Medicines Verification System (EMVS) is a comprehensive, pan-European system designed to prevent falsified medicines from entering the legal supply chain and reaching patients. The primary purpose of the EMVS is to enhance the safety and integrity of the pharmaceutical supply chain by ensuring that only authentic medicines are dispensed to patients. It achieves this by implementing a robust verification mechanism that tracks and verifies the authenticity of medicinal products at various points in the supply chain.
Established under the Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) and its Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/161, the EMVS is a collaborative initiative involving pharmaceutical manufacturers, wholesalers, pharmacies, hospitals, and national competent authorities across Europe. While non-EU countries may have their own verification systems, they often interact with the EMVS for cross-border transactions.
